1921 FEBRUARY – Acquired its TOBA Plant and HARIMA Plant of TEIKOKU KISEN K.K., and then changed names respectively to:


- TOBA DENKI SEISAKUSHO ( later known as, KOBE " TOBA PLANT " ); and,


- HARIMA ZOSENJO.


1921 APRIL - Increased capital to 20,000,000 million yen.

1939 OCTOBER - Inaugurated its "Chofu Plant," and increased capital to 90-million yen.

1949 JUNE – KOBE Toba Plant, Yamada Plant, Matsuzaka Plant and Tokyo Plant became SHINKO ELECTRIC CO. LTD.


1949 JUNE - KOBE STEEL holds KOBE Yamate, Wakinohama, Iwaya, Nagoya, Okubo, Hidaka, Amagasaki, Noto, and Kochi Plants.


1949 JUNE - Decrease 18,027,000 million yen ( August 1949 ) in capital to offset losses from restructuring under the law ( Corporate Restructuring and Improvement Law - June 1949 ).

1954 APRIL - "Amagasaki Plant" becomes a subsidiary of SHINKO WIRE CO. LTD. with capital of 100,000,000 million yen.


1954 MAY - Capital increases to 3,600,000,000 billion yen, of which 334,616,000 million yen came from capital out-of "Revaluation Reserves."


1954 JUNE - PFAUDLER ( USA ) obtained an alliance with Enameled Products Department that, with an infusion of 135,000,000 million yen in capital, became SHINKO PFAUDLER CO. LTD. [ NOTE: In 1989, SHINKO PFAUDLER CO. LTD. changed its name to SHINKO PANTEC CO. LTD. ]

1985 AUGUST - Inaugurates its "Biotechnology Research Laboratory."


1986 JANUARY - Opens its liaison office in Beijing, China.


1987 JULY - Construction of its first-phase ( 1st phase ) is completed of KOBE CORPORATE RESEARCH LABORATORIES at the Seishin Industrial Park in Kobe, Japan.


1987 SEPTEMBER - Upgrades eight ( 8 ) domestic ( Japan ) offices to, sales offices.


1987 OCTOBER - Closes its "Amagasaki Plant."


1987 NOVEMBER - Closes its "Kure Plant."


1987 DECEMBER - Inaugurates its "HARIMA Plant."


1988 APRIL - Changes its America headquarters ( in New York, USA ) name from KOBE STEEL AMERICA INC. to KOBE STEEL USA INC.


1988 APRIL - Closes its "Moji Plant."


1988 SEPTEMBER - Closes its "Hidaka Plant."


1988 OCTOBER - Inaugurates its KOBE STEEL EUROPE LTD. ‘Research Laboratory’ in Surrey, United Kingdom ( UK ).


1989 - SHINKO PFAUDLER CO. LTD. ( see above ) changed its name to SHINKO PANTEC CO. LTD.


1990 APRIL - Opens its liaison office in Moscow, Russia. Upgrades its Nagoya, Japan sales office to its 'branch' office. Moves its "Biotechnology Research Laboratory" from Kobe, Japan to its Tsukuba Research Laboratory, then inaugurated.


1990 APRIL - Inaugurates KOBE Electronic Materials Center at Research Triangle Park ( North Carolina, USA ).


1990 JULY - KOBE STEEL CO. with UNITED STATES STEEL ( U.S. STEEL ), establishes an equal partnership joint venture with USX CORPORATION.


1990 NOVEMBER – KOBE issues 200,000,000 million additional stock certificate shares at market price.


1991 JANUARY - A joint venture is established between KOBE STEEL LTD. and  ALCOA INC. named KSL ALCOA ALUMINUM CO. LTD. ( KAAL - KOBE ALCOA ALUMINUM CO. LTD. ) that produces and markets 'aluminum can' stock.


1992 JANUARY – KOBE sells real estate ( 21,660 square meters ) with plant, buildings and offices ( totaling 2,513-square meters within the Nakahamacho prefecture, Amagasaki prefecture, and Hyogo prefecture to DAIDO SANSO K.K.


1992 APRIL – KOBE consolidates its research facilities in a new complex called "KOBE CORPORATE RESEARCH LABORATORIES ( Seishin Industrial Park, Kobe, Japan ).


1992 MAY – KOBE moves iron and steel division “Iron and Steel Technology Laboratories” nearer to its "Kakogawa Works."


1992 OCTOBER - KOBE STEEL stock shares are listed on the London Stock Exchange, and began trading KOBE STEEL Over-The-Counter ( OTC ) stock market shares - established by American Depository Receipt ( ADR ) - an 'unlisted facility' - through the BANK OF NEW YORK ( BONY ) in USA.


1992 NOVEMBER - Inaugurates its TOYOHASHI FA and ‘Robotics Center’.


1993 JANUARY – KOBE closes its Mexico City, Mexico office.


1993 MAY - Integrates its three ( 3 ) machinery plants in Takasago Works and the Iwaya Plant into the completed Industrial Machinery Plant.


1995 JANUARY - Earthquake ( Hanshin-Awaji earthquake ) caused financial damage equivalent 102,000,000,000 billion yen to the headquarters office of KOBE STEEL, KOBE WORKS, and KAKOGAWA WORKS.


1995 FEBRUARY - After the earthquake shutdown ( January 1995 ), partially resumes its operation of rolling steel stock facilities at KOBE WORKS.


1995 MARCH - Closes its "Nagoya Plant" after "Daian Plant" begins full operation.


1995 APRIL - After earthquake ( January 1995 ) reconstruction of KOBE headquarters is established for restoring operations.


1996 FEBRUARY - Invests in DAIKAN CORPORATION, a steel drum producer.


1996 MARCH - Sells land portions in Ohama, Amagasaki and Wakinohama, and Iwaya areas in Kobe, Japan.


1996 APRIL - Turned the specialty steel tube and pipe business into KOBE SPECIAL TUBE CO. LTD. and the cutting tool business into SHINKO KOBELCO TOOL CO. LTD.


1998 OCTOBER - KOBE business affiliation with TEXAS INSTRUMENTS INC. in their KTI Semiconductor firm is dissolved. KOBE changes that name to KMT SEMICONDUCTOR LTD. as it began a joint venture with its new partner MICRON TECHNOLOGY INC. ( MTI ).


1999 MARCH - Closes its Toyohashi FA and Robotics Center.


1999 APRIL - Turns ‘divisions’ into ‘internal companies’, and introduces a system of corporate officers.


1999 MAY - Groups scattered offices of Tokyo Head Office into one ( 1 ) building in Kita-Shinagawa, Tokyo.


1999 JULY - MITSUBISHI CORPORATION broad alliance with KOBE forms their "Materials Corporation" and their MITSUBISHI SHINDOH CO. LTD. for 'copper' [ and Platinum Group Metals / PGM, e.g. gold, platinum, etc. ) metal products.


1999 OCTOBER - Consolidates its KOBELCO CONSTRUCTION MACHINERY LTD. ( and subsidiaries ) and YUTANI HEAVY INDUSTRIES LTD. into a new subsidiary KOBELCO CONSTRUCTION MACHINERY CO. LTD.


1999 DECEMBER - NOF CORPORATION established into a joint venture called SHINKO TASETO CO. LTD. to manufacture welding materials for stainless steels.


2000 MAY - Issues one ( 1 ) share of stock in KOBE STEEL LTD. for one ( 1 ) share of stock in KOBELCO CONSTRUCTION MACHINERY CO. LTD. ( per stock share par value: 50 yen ). In total, 545,100 shares of stock were issued, and capital was increased to 213,667,024,000 Billion yen.


2000 APRIL - Robot painting business went to KAWASAKI HEAVY INDUSTRIES LTD., and its “robotic business” ( see above ) ‘handling’ went to OKURA YUSOKI CO. LTD.


2000 APRIL - Increased equity in affiliate NIPPON KOSHUHA STEEL CO. LTD. from 30.6% to 51%, and turned NIPPON KOSHUHA STEEL CO. LTD. into a subsidiary. NIPPON KOSHUHA STEEL CO. LTD. marketing rights and steel making operations for ‘bearing’ steel were transferred to KOBE STEEL.


2000 SEPTEMBER - Transferred its engineering plastics business to MITSUBISHI ENGINEERING-PLASTICS CORPORATION.


2000 DECEMBER - Signs a basic Agreement with SUMITOMO LIGHT METAL INDUSTRIES LTD. forming broad alliance in the aluminum extrusion business.


2000 DECEMBER - Signs cooperative agreement with U.S. STEEL ( UNITED STATES STEEL ) for ‘research and development’ ( R&D ) in the field of ‘automotive sheet steel’ technology.


2001 MAY - Management rights in KMT SEMICONDUCTOR were placed under control of KOBE joint venture partner MICRON TECHNOLOGY INC. ( MTI ) transferring 75% KOBE equity in KMT to MTI.


2001 AUGUST - Establishes "Shinko Kobe Power Inc." and transferred its wholesale power supply business at Kobe Works to Shinko Kobe Power Inc..


2001 SEPTEMBER - Signs final agreement with "Kobelco Construction Machinery Co. Ltd." and CNH GLOBAL N.V. ( firm, of: FIAT Group ) to form their global alliance for construction equipment.


2001 SEPTEMBER - Transfers its Kobelco Construction Machinery Co. Ltd. BGA and CSP printed circuit board inspection equipment business to "DAI-NIPPON SCREEN MANUFACTURING CO. LTD.


2001 DECEMBER - Forms alliance with "Nippon Steel Corporation" to improve the competitiveness of the two ( 2 ) companies through mutual support in ‘raw materials procurement’ and ‘logistics’.


2001 DECEMBER - Forms strategic global cooperation pact for specialty steel wire rod and bar used in automotive applications with the LUCCHINI Group ( Italy ), the top manufacturer of specialty steel long products in Europe.


2002 JANUARY - Signs cooperation agreement with VOESTALPINE STAHL GMBH ( Austria ) for ‘automotive sheet steel’ technologies.


2002 MARCH - Absorbs real estate subsidiary, "Shinko Kosan Ltd., establishing a real estate company, increasing by 1.5 billion yen capitalization of KOBE STEEL to 215,000,000,000 Billion yen.


2002 MAY - The 700,000 KiloWatt ( KW ) No. 1 Power Plant of Shinko Kobe Power Inc. began its commercial operation.


2002 MAY - Agrees with "Kawasaki Steel Corporation" to form an alliance to strengthen both companies welding business areas, including research and development of welding consumables, production, and procurement.




On January 31, 2003 KOBE corporate capital totaled: 218,100,000,000 Billion yen.


On September 30, 2002, KOBE employees totaled: 27,179.
